CMC Electronics Wins A-10 HUD Reliability Upgrade

(Paris International Air Show - June 13, 2005) Southwest Research Institute® has awarded CMC Electronics the second phase of a U.S. Air Force development contract to upgrade the Head-Up Display (HUD) Projection Unit on the A-10 aircraft. The primary objective of the program is to increase Reliability and Maintainability, with a secondary objective to dramatically reduce the lifecycle costs of the A-10 HUD by providing a tenfold increase in the reliability of the HUD. The A-10 aircraft is scheduled to remain in service until the year 2028.

CMC Electronics is responsible for replacing all of the existing HUD electronics with modern circuit components. CMC will deliver two flight-ready units and one "non-flyable" unit for a series of performance tests. The upgrade will be performed at CMC Electronics' facility near Chicago, Illinois.

"CMC Electronics is proud to be part of the A-10 community", said Jean-Michel Comtois, Vice President, Military Aviation, CMC Electronics. "The A-10 and its pilots and support personnel are vital to the National Security of the United States. In addition to providing a more reliable HUD, we will introduce a number of functional performance benefits. For example, the pilots will enjoy higher HUD luminance, allowing them to utilize the HUD more easily in environments with high background light. Night Vision Goggle (NVG) interoperability will also be improved."

CMC's high-reliability upgrade of the HUD Projection Unit will minimize overall logistics support for the aircraft by positively impacting the depot level test equipment and spares components required to support the fleet. The CMC design also provides advanced Built In Test (BIT).

Southwest Research Institute®, based in San Antonio, Texas, is an independent, non-profit applied engineering and physical sciences research and development organization with 2,900 employees.

CMC Electronics' principal locations are in Montreal, Quebec; Ottawa, Ontario; and Chicago, IL. CMC Electronics is a private company controlled by an investor group led by ONCAP L.P. ONCAP is a CDN $400 million investment fund established by Onex Corporation and a number of leading Canadian financial institutions. Onex is a diversified company with annual consolidated revenues of approximately CDN $16 billion and consolidated assets of approximately CDN $14 billion. Onex is one of Canada's largest companies with global operations in the service, manufacturing and technology industries.
